West Virginia falls to Cincinnati, 24-21

The West Virginia Mountaineers put up a good fight before falling to the No. 5 Cincinnati Bearcats, 24-21.

The Mountaineers came out ready to play and matched the two first half touchdowns by Cincinnati to keep the game dead-locked at halftime.

Cincinnati began to take control of the game in the second half, but West Virginia simply wouldn’t go away.

It was a terrific defensive performance from West Virginia, which forced the benching of Cincinnati’s starting quarterback.

The Mountaineers came up just short of pulling off the upset and now must try to win out down the stretch to reach a solid bowl game.

West Virginia edges Louisville, 17-9

The West Virginia Mountaineers got back on track with a 17-9 victory over the Louisville Cardinals.

It wasn’t a flashy effort by any means from the usually explosive Mountaineers, who managed just two touchdowns on the day.

They took just a one-point lead into halftime and needed 10 unanswered fourth-quarter points to open up some room.

It was certainly not an effort that got the home crowd fired up and into the game, but a win is a win.

The Mountaineers still hold slim hopes of a Big East title, but South Florida and Cincinnati stand in the way.

West Virginia falls to South Florida, 30-19

The West Virginia Mountaineers fell short against the South Florida Bulls in a huge Big East showdown, 30-19.

The loss pushes the Mountaineers out of the Big East championship picture and keeps South Florida right in the mix.

The two teams played fairly evenly in the first half, with the Mountaineers trailing by eight points at halftime.

West Virginia just never got the offense going in the second half, managing just a touchdown in the third quarter.

Freshman Kilicli suspended for 20 games

The eighth-ranked Mountaineers basketball team suffered its first setback of the season before it has even begun, receiving news that freshman forward Deniz Kilicli has been suspended for the first 20 games of the year for violating an amateurism rule. Kilicli broke an NCAA rule when he played on a Turkish team two years ago that included a professional player.

West Virginia wasn’t counting on him to make a big contribution right away, but the suspension will surely stunt his growth and ensure his inability to provide depth in February and March, something he could have provided had he been able to get acclimated to the college game early on. Regardless, the Mountaineers have great expectations this season, with a Big East title not out of the realm of possibility.
