The No. 22 West Virginia Mountaineers held off the heavy-hearted Connecticut Huskies for a 28-24 victory.
The Mountaineers found themselves trailing 17-14 at halftime but scored a touchdown in the third quarter to take the lead.
They were then able to hold off the Huskies, who were playing for their fallen teammate, cornerback Jasper Howard.
The team almost pulled off the upset for their former teammate, who was tragically stabbed to death at a dance on campus.

The host West Virginia Mountaineers rallied for a 24-7 victory over the rival Marshall Thundering Herd.
West Virginia surrendered a first quarter touchdown and went into the locker room at halftime trailing, 7-3.
However, they took the lead in the third quarter and then added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
It was an impressive effort from the Mountaineers’ defense, which held Marshall scoreless over the final three quarters.
West Virginia is going to need to start getting out of the gate faster or risk losing to inferior opponents.

The West Virginia Mountaineers showed up ready to play Saturday in a 34-13 win over the Syracuse Orange.
It was nice to see West Virginia bounce back after a sloppy Thursday night victory over the Colorado Buffaloes.
Quarterback Jarrett Browns and Co. wasted little time taking control of the game, building a 27-0 halftime lead.
Syracuse did win the second half, but the Mountaineers already had the game well in control by halftime. ( Read More…)

The West Virginia Mountaineers didn’t make it pretty, but they did just enough for a 35-24 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes.
Even with no Pat White or Steve Slaton, this offense is still pretty explosive behind Noel Devine and Jarrett Brown.
The Mountaineers need to clean up some of their turnovers, which single-handedly kept Colorado in the game.
West Virginia need 14 fourth-quarter points to put the game away against a Buffaloes team that has really struggled this year.

Noel Devine personally made sure that the West Virginia Mountaineers didn’t suffer a second straight defeat. The diminutive running back ran for a career-best 220 yards, gashing the Colorado defense in a 35-24 win over the Buffaloes on Thursday night.
Devine also scored a touchdown and earned first down after first down in the fourth quarter to stunt a late Colorado rally. He got help from quarterback Jarrett Brown, who threw for 148 yards and two touchdowns.
It wasn’t a perfect night for the West Virginia offense, though, as it lost an astounding four fumbles in the first half, making the turnover count 10 over the past two games.
And the Mountaineers defense wasn’t overly impressive, either, letting Colorado quarterback Cody Hawkins throw for 292 yards and three touchdowns. It will need to be better as Big East play begins.
